Démosthène, l’aborde sur la place du
marché et lui demande :
– Maître, je veux vendre ma maison,
tu la connais si bien pour l’avoir
fréquentée lors de mes banquets.
Pourrais-tu écrire une belle annonce
que je laisserai à la vue de tous sur
l’agora ?
Démosthène prit une tablette de cire,
un stylet et se mit à écrire :
« Je vends une propriété
enchanteresse, où chantent les oiseaux
dès que pointe l’aube, où le vent agite
les feuilles des oliviers, où une eau
de source cristalline coule en
abondance, où le patio baigné par
le soleil naissant du matin offre
au soir une ombre tranquille. »
Des mois plus tard, Démosthène
rencontre son ami et lui demande
s’il a vendu sa propriété.
– Ah, non ! Je n’y pense même
plus, lui répond-il. Quand j’ai lu
ton annonce, j’ai compris quel trésor
je tenais là et j’ai renoncé à m’en
séparer.
